On Friday January 15, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., Yonkers Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett will be announcing the start of “Operation Safe Cab” at the 1st Precinct located at 730 East Grassy Sprain Road.

In order to enhance the safety of livery and taxi cab drivers operating within the City of Yonkers, the Yonkers Police Department will be implementing a new program called “Operation Safe Cab.” This program, which will be provided free of charge, is specifically designed to reduce the potential for cab driver robberies by authorizing police to inspect a vehicle which is enrolled in the program at anytime in order to ensure the driver’s safety.

Cab drivers wishing to participate in the program must complete an Operation Safe Cab registration form, and will be provided with YPD decals that shall be affixed to the participating vehicle. The decal shall identify the cab driver as a participant in the program and authorize Yonkers Police Department personnel to stop the vehicle and conduct a safety inspection at any time to check on the safety of the driver. These safety inspections are not intended for the purpose of enforcing New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law or City Ordinance Violations. The objective of these inspections is to create the perception that a cab may be stopped at any time by the Yonkers Police and thereby reducing the opportunity for committing a successful robbery or other crimes against the driver.

The Yonkers Police Hack Unit will be responsible for the distribution and maintenance of program materials and will facilitate participation in the program through their daily contacts with livery and taxi applicants and operators. The Hack Unit is located at the 1st Precinct at 730 East Grassy Sprain Road and will have registration materials.
